Life Through Art: Santa Fe is at once an academic, artistic, and personal exploration of Santa Fe and New Mexico. I was first drawn to Santa Fe in the summer of 2016 when I worked as an apprentice at the Santa Fe Opera. Spending most of my time working at SFO, I didn't have much free time to explore the region, but what I could see I quickly fell in love with. It wasn't long before I became determined to spend more time in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment.
This summer, with the support of Amherst College and my wonderful supervisors, I am able to fulfill this dream of mine while also learning more about the area. As an artist and designer myself, I am struck by how many artists, museums, and galleries are located in a city of this size. But, surrounded by such a beautiful landscape and rich history, it's no wonder so many people come to live and work in Santa Fe. It is these connections between place, community, culture, and art that I am interested in studying.
In order to do this, my project consists of historical research, visiting local museums and galleries, and interviewing local artists to ask about their experiences in Santa Fe, and about access to art and culture in the city. Accessibility to art and culture tends to be an issue in gentrified cities, or cities moving towards gentrification, like Santa Fe. I hope to take what I learn about accessibility and apply it to my career goal of one day making a free after-school program in the arts for kids of all different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Thank you for taking the time to look into Life Through Art: Santa Fe. Whether you live in Santa Fe, have visited, or have never been, I believe that there's a little something for everyone here. Happy exploring!
Life Through Art: Santa Fe is part of the Amherst College Center for Community Engagement's Independent Summer Research Project program. As a part of this program, LTASF is one of eight research projects being conducted by other Amherst College students, and each project is funded by the CCE and outside donors affiliated with Amherst College.
