About Lauren Thompson.
I am a junior Theater and Dance major at Amherst College with a focus on lighting and scenic design. While I am focused on designing for theater, I am a multidisciplinary artist with interests in drawing, painting, photography, and graphic design. I am an aspiring theatrical designer hoping to integrate my varied artistic background into multi-media and interactive experiences. Outside of the Amherst College Theater and Dance Department, I have worked with the Santa Fe Opera, Five College Opera, Open Stage Theater Company, and the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival.
Aside from design and artistic practice, I am passionate about community engagement and artistic outreach. I am interested in the connections between place, art, culture, and socioeconomic background. From my experience, the arts are often financially exclusive, making it difficult for people of lower-income households to be a part of an artistic audience. For this reason, one of my professional goals is to make a free or low-cost after-school program in the arts so that children of all backgrounds can partake in the arts, while at the same time diversifying the artistic community. As a step towards making this goal into reality, I am conducting a research project, Life Through Art: Santa Fe, that explores both the artistic history and community of Santa Fe and the ways in which people are able to access art and culture in this small southwestern city.
